Frequently Asked Questions

Allan Dorans is the Member of the Westminster Parliament for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock. It is a large constituency and includes the main towns of Ayr, Maybole, Girvan, Cumnock and New Cumnock, many villages, and rural areas as far south as Ballantrae. It covers parts (but not all) of the areas within the boundaries of South Ayrshire and East Ayrshire Councils.

The constituency boundaries for the United Kingdom Parliament which sits at Westminster, the Scottish Parliament which meets at Holyrood and the local Councils of South Ayrshire and East Ayrshire Council, all have, confusingly, different boundaries and each representative body have different roles and specific responsibilities.

Put simply, MPs deal with matters which affect the whole of the UK, MSPs deal with matters which affect the whole of Scotland and Councillors deal with matters affecting their local Council area.

There are some strictly observed parliamentary and local protocols which dictate that elected representatives may only deal with matters within their own jurisdiction and areas of responsibility.
