Following his Police career, he studied for the professional Personnel Management qualification and became the Personnel and Training Executive with the Rank Organisation at Butlins in Ayr. He then qualified as a professional mediator, specialising in resolving conflict and was the Managing Director of his own Mediation and Training consultancy.

In 2012 he was elected to South Ayrshire Council and appointed SNP Council Group Leader in Opposition in 2014. During his tenure, he introduced more Council Motions than any other Councillor, including two motions in support of WASPI women and one relating to the removal of the hugely unpopular Holmston Road cycle path in Ayr.

In 2010 he was appointed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service as a Justice of the Peace for the Sheriffdom of South Strathclyde, and Dumfries and Galloway and sat regularly as a JP at Ayr Justice of the Peace Court.

He is a lifelong community volunteer and charity fundraiser and has raised over £30,000 for Cancer Research by undertaking sponsored challenges including running the New York marathon, and trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

More recently, he took part in the 23 mile Kiltwalk to raise funds for Whiteley’s Retreat, an amazing local charity that provides much-needed holidays for children and their families living with cancer and other life-changing illnesses.

He has been involved with VASA (Voluntary Action South Ayrshire) for over 15 years as a volunteer trustee and was its Chair for several years. For the last 10 years he has helped organise a Christmas dinner for about 70 elderly people who would otherwise have been on their own on Christmas Day.

As your MP, he is totally committed to serving you by honestly representing your views, working hard for this constituency and fighting for the causes that matter to you.

Above all, he will make himself available to anyone who needs representation, advocacy, or help of any kind, irrespective of their background, circumstance or political persuasion.
